Scene 3!!! (my fingers are tired!)
Scene 3
Doctor- (enter room takes blood pressure of Diane, then takes pulse while holding hand over mouth to feel breath. Looks up sympathetically.) “She’s gone. I’m really sorry for your loss.”
Exit Doctor
Roger- ( crumpling up beside Diane shaking with sobs while holding her hand)
Arlene- “Oh! My only little girl…gone!” (turns her head away sitting down and cries)
Roger- (still sobbing) “ I can’t raise two children without her! I can’t, I can’t.”
Arlene- (long silence then looking up, she walks to the bed taking her daughters hand contemplating) “I could take Paris.”
Roger- “Paris? Take my little girl? Do you think I’d let you take her after only six hours!”
Arlene- “I only wonder what you will do when she becomes a teenager.”
Roger- “I’ll figure something out.”
Arlene- “Paris needs to have a woman in her life and you can by no means fill that place in her life.”
Roger- “Don’t tell me what I can and cannot do, I know very well, but…..I can’t just give her up right away.”
Arlene- “I understand Roger, but if you really have Paris’s best interests in mind, you will realize that a woman is more important than a man in a girl’s life.”
Roger- “And I suppose that you would like to take her? (Angrily sarcastic)
Arlene- “Well, it would make sense. I know the feelings of a girl and will be able to understand. Besides, she would feel outnumbered with you and Kenneth both being boys. And how are you going to manage to take care of two infants at once? Changing diapers, feeding them, and giving them the individual attention that they need. That is an awful lot to ask of one person; especially as you have no experience.”
Roger- “Well, I guess you can take her until the children are a little older. Then she’s mine.”
(Arlene goes over to the incubator and picks up the crying Paris)
Arlene- “Shhhh. Nana loves you, everything will be alright.”
End of scene 3
Scene 2!!! (aren't we industrious?)
Scene 2
Arlene enters hospital. Upon seeing Roger at a table in the waiting room, his back towards her, she goes to him.
Arlene- “Hello, Roger! How are the children and Diane?”
Roger turns to face Arlene revealing a tear stained face
Arlene- “What’s the matter? Is everything okay?”
Roger- “The children are fine; but Diane…… she is …..um…… the they can’t get it to stop. They don’t think that… (breaking down in sobs) they don’t think that there is much chance of her living.”
Arlene- (a look of horror sweeps across her face; then she looks angrily at Roger) “THIS is your fault! I want to see my daughter immediately!”
Roger- (he becomes confused) “Why are you acting like this?”
Arlene- “My daughter has a chance of dying! Don’t I have the right to be a little demanding? I never did like you; I tried to tell Diane that when she found you drinking, that you were worth nothing and would waste her life.”
Roger- (becoming angry) “You think that this is my fault? Do you think that I purposely made Diane bleed? I’m scared too and you have no right to accuse me and run me on a false guilt trip. I won’t take it. And how dare you bring up such a painful memory. This is not my fault.”
Arlene- (indignantly straitening and walking to front desk asking receptionist) “What room is Diane Jones in?”
Receptionist- “Room 116B ma-am.”
Arlene turns and walks past Roger with an angry glare
Exit Arlene
End of Scene 2
Scene 1!!!
Act 1 scene 1
(Roger is at one side of the stage in hospital on phone, Arlene is on other side at home picks up phone when rings)
Arlene- “Hello?”
Roger- “Hi Arlene? This is Roger, we are at the hospital and Diane just had the twins. You’re a grandma!!!”
Arlene- “That is wonderful! What are they?”
Roger- “It is a girl and a boy and their names are Paris and Kenneth. They were born at 6:00 this morning seventeen minutes apart.”
Arlene- “How much do they weigh?”
Roger- “Kenneth weighs 6 pounds and 3 ounces and Paris is 5 pounds 8 ounces.”
Arlene- “How is my daughter Diane?”
Roger- “She has started bleeding a little again, but the doctors say that it is nothing to worry about and they will be able to stop it. Can you fly down from New York?”
Arlene- (indignantly) “Of course I will, what do you think I would do?”
(Roger laughs)
Roger- “When will you be here?”
Arlene- “As soon as possible.”
Roger- “Alright we’ll see you then”
Arlene- “Bye.”
Roger- “Bye.”
